When urine gets on your carpet or fabric, it starts as acidic but turns into alkaline crystals as it dries. These crystals trap bacteria and cause stains and odours. To fix this, you need to get rid of the crystals.

• Odour Removal: The smell from urine is due to ammonia and bacteria. By neutralising and removing the urine crystals, we get rid of the ammonia and kill the bacteria, eliminating the smell.
• Stain Removal: Urine stains can often be removed with acidic cleaners. Some tough stains might need a bleaching agent like hydrogen peroxide. However, if urine has soaked in deeply, especially on wool carpets, it might cause permanent damage that can’t be fully fixed.

When urine dries, it becomes highly alkaline (pH 11-12), which can damage wool fibres and affect carpet dyes. Wool and nylon carpets are dyed in acidic conditions, so high alkalinity weakens these dye bonds.

If urine stays on the carpet for a long time, it weakens the dye bonds. Even if the carpet looks fine initially, the weakened dyes can be washed away during cleaning, leaving a bleached or discoloured spot. This discoloration is caused by the urine, not by the cleaning process.

In summary, treating urine stains properly is crucial to avoid lasting damage and odours.

If the urine stain is recent or has completely dried, the first step is to rehydrate the urine for effective extraction from the carpet. Here’s how you can do it:

• Rehydrate the Stain: Mix 2 cups of warm water with 1 cup of white vinegar. Pour this solution over the affected area of the carpet.
• Extract the Moisture: Place a thick towel, folded several times, on the wet area. Stand on the towel to help absorb the moisture. Repeat this process with fresh towels until no more moisture is transferred to the towel.

This method is effective if the pet has only urinated in the area once or twice. However, if the pet has frequently visited the spot, the urine may have penetrated into the carpet underlay and subfloor.
